Vintage Silver Joan of Arc Waffle Knurled ThimbleFrench * Circa 1970
This classic French thimble has waffled knurling with a design called "Joan of Arc tending her sheep" or "Jeanne d'Arc gardant ses moutons". The design flows up into the knurling.
It is stamped with the French Mercury head silver hallmark that was used for 800/1000 pure silver made in Paris. It also has the maker's mark used by Roger Lenain (Lenain Frères). He bought the Lorillion/Féau company who made this thimble in the early 1900s and got the original thimble dies. He re-issued several of them in 1970 and this is one of those thimbles.
The condition is mint, crisp and in round with no holes, damage or even wear. It's about an American size 9 (15.9 mm diameter opening) and is gilded inside. It narrows quickly though and would fit smaller fingers. This thimble is shown on p. 92 of
