This is the original carved wooden sign that hung above the door of Calvis shop in the 1970s-1990s in middlebury vermont. Measures 80 by 27 1/2 inches. Is not as heavy as it looks. Displays nicely. A wonderful piece from a time gone by.
Joseph Calvi was an Italian immigrant who came to Middlebury and opened his business in the early 1900s. He sold candy, ice cream and fruit, as well as other things. After he died, it was operated by his daughters, and then by his grandson Blaney Blodgett. His grandson died in 1997 and Calvi's closed its doors in 1998. It was in business for over 90 years, most of it at the same location on Main Street. It was a real daily gathering spot for the locals. You could get a meal, get some ice cream, a coffee or soda, chips and candy, newspapers and magazines, watch the news, even play a game of PacMan. The interior of Calvi's was very interesting, full of all sorts of old things, and there was a long wooden counter you could sit at.
